The clown car of book booths

The clown car of book booths

We just want to thank everyone who came out to see us or pick up a book at Comic Con. It was a great weekend for OOP 2, and we moved and signed more books than ever before!

We met so many awesome people and got to see countless old friends including our boothmates from the Flight Comics. We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. (Maybe just better transportation options…)

In the photo above, you can see part of the beautiful poster for the Totoro Forest Project. An art auction to help save the very Camphor forest that inspired Miazaki’s masterpiece Totoro. Many of OOP’s artists are selling pieces in the auction as well as countless others. The collective is simply mindblowing. For more info, go to their website here.

See You at Comic Con!

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:18 pm

San Diego Comic Con is just a few days away and we’ll be there with plenty of copies of Out of Picture 2 on hand to sell and sign. Once again we’ll be sharing a booth with our dear friends in Flight as they debut the greatly anticipated 5th Volume! Swing by booth 1228 for all the goodness! We’ll be there Thursday through Sunday.

A few more OOP 2 reviews have popped up…

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review says “Out of Picture Vol. 2 recaptures the magic” and Bookgasm.com says “‘tis gorgeous…”

There’s a really nice write-up at the Onion’s AV Club, and ComicsInTheClassroom.com had kind words for both OOP 2 and Flight 4!

Hope to see you at the Con!

A few reviews for OOP 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:24 am

Out of Picture 2 has been out for a couple weeks now, and a few reviews have popped up. While the book’s not everyone’s cup of tea, it has definitely struck a chord with some people…

“Here’s a cop-out for you:  in many, many places in this collection the art is so jaw-droppingly beautiful that a critical evaluation of the stories becomes difficult. Sorry.  It’s just that I get so dazzled looking through this book that I sometimes forget to turn the pages in the right direction, or find myself experiencing “lost time.”  It’s that stunning.” - Peter Gutiérrez, Firefox News

“This could be the best graphic story anthology of the year.” - Leroy Douresseaux, the Comic Book Bin

And one last review from Steve Duin of The Oregonian who discovered us at MoCCA.

Hot Time at MoCCA

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:49 pm

dang, it’s hot!
Peter Nguyen (outside the Puck Buildng before MoCCA) just can’t keep his thoughts to himself.

The first heat wave of the summer didn’t keep the crowds away at MoCCA Fest 2008 (although it did make a fire alarm and evacuation of several hundred people from the Puck Building very uncomfortable). A lot of people grabbed copies of the just-released OOP 2, and we had a fantastic time meeting fans of the book and signing their copies.

We really want to extend our thanks to everyone who came out and picked up a copy, as well as everyone who lugged the copy they already owned to MoCCA for us to sign! These books aren’t light!

Yep, they’re straight.
Thanks for pulling the poster together, Nash!

Sadler workin’ it
Here’s Jason Sadler about to torpedo Willie Real’s plane. And no, that’s not a double entendre.

San Diego’s not that far off! See you there!

Come down to the MoCCA Art Festival this weekend and take in one of New York’s best comic and art fests. Out of Picture 2 will be making its debut there, and a bunch of our east coast crew will be there to sign books both Saturday and Sunday. The details are here for my favorite comic fest.

Come by our table (B20) and say hi!

Out of Picture 2 ON SALE TODAY!!!

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:44 am

The day has finally arrived! OOP 2 is available today at bookstores and on Amazon.com.Just wanted to share a few tidbits from the book itself that many people haven’t had the chance to see yet…

While Dan Lopez wasn’t able to contribute a story for OOP 2, he gave us a BEAUTIFUL image to use for our table of contents. Click below for the larger version and you can also see the entire lineup of stories for the book.

This is the cover for the development gallery - it’s a meaty section. In fact, this entire volume is a lot thicker than the last one. By almost sixty pages!

Robert Mackenzie was also not able to do a story of OOP 2, but instead did caricatures of everyone in the book! We weren’t able to get a group photo together this time, but this is even better. He really nailed everyone. If you’re ever in the crosshairs of Mackenzie’s pen - duck!

New York Comic Con and a couple more OOP 1 reviews

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:37 pm

Things have been crazy busy lately so I haven’t been able to update the blog quite as often as I’d like, but there a couple of things happening in the next week worth noting.

• David Gordon will be doing an OOP book signing event at MoCCA on Tuesday, April 15th. More info to come.

• A bunch of us will be signing copies of OOP 1 at New York Comic Con on Saturday, April 19th from 4:30 - 5:30 at the Villard booth.

A couple more reviews of OOP 1 have popped up online:

- Wicked Winter says the “pages are lush, beautifully illustrated, more the kind of work to frame and display than standard comic book fare.” “…a whimsical delight, fun to page through even if only to devour the myriad art styles represented within.”

- Static Multimedia says Out of Picture “strays away from the conventional graphic novel that most of us are so familiar with and takes an innovative step to what it could be. Truly a wonderful collection to have around, and a nice coffee table book to boot.”

OOP 2 Preview, part 3

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:16 am

The last batch of artists in Volume 2 are mostly new additions to the Out of Picture crew.

Sang Jun bannerPeter Nguyen bannerGuillermo “Willie” Real
Sang Jun Lee
, who was the lead character designer on Horton and who designed all the Wookies in Star Wars:ROTS (among other things), lends his talent to the charming story The Fun Trip. Peter Nguyen’s The Missive is an absolutely stunning tale of a hunter who must atone for an unfortunate shot. Plane Food by Willie Real is an exquisitely drawn treat which might evoke in some a childhood version of a classic Twilight Zone episode. Great stuff all around.

And finally, my contribution is a story called Under Pressure which is about a failed jailbreak in a mining colony and the surreal events that surround it.

That’s it for the previews for now. More to come as we get closer to release!

OOP 2 Preview, part 2

Filed under: News, Uncategorized — admin @ 9:49 pm

This time we’re featuring a couple more returning artists from OOP Vol 1 as well as a few more new faces.

Vincent Nguyen’s “Domesticity” was featured in New York Magazine’s comic blog a few months ago, and now he returns with his new story “The Carnivore.” Nash Dunnigan is also back in Volume 2 with his beautiful New York gargoyle epic, “Why Bother?”

We’re so excited about the new artists that have joined us for Volume 2! Here’s a taste of a few more of them:

Kyle Macnaughton brings his grandiose vision to the otherworldly journey “Part One.” Jason Sadler’s “Subplotter” is a clever throwback to UPA style animation in this World War 2 tale. And Jake Parker (known for his work in Flight Comics) tells the story of a boy who must find the blessing within his curse in “The Antler Boy.”
